Hello! How are you??

I'm Sachi as Backpackers Miyajima hostel staff☆

Now,Everyone do you know THIS??

So,this is a kind of ornament of New Year and like talisman.

Right one is the Crane, left one is the Turtle!     Did you understand??

Japan has suchlike this a saying, 「Turu wa sen-nenn,Kame wa Man-nenn」

"Turu"means crane, and "Kame" means turtle.  "sen-nenn" is thousand years, and "man-nenn" is ten thousand years.

So,This saying means that crane and turtle is symbol of long life.

Both this ornament and saying is very interesting for me!!

How about you☆? ?

Hello everybody.

It was a holiday today.

Because of Seijin no Hi.

People who is 20 years old, they celebrated Age Day today.

How do they celebrate it?

Check below out!!

Seijin Shiki (成人式 lit. Adult Ceremony?) is the Japanese coming-of-age ceremony. It is held annually on Seijin no Hi (成人の日 lit. Coming of age day?), the second Monday in January. Festivities include ceremonies held at local and prefectural offices and parties amongst family and friends to celebrate passage into adulthood.

Hey guys.

This is Hisa as Backpackers Miyajima MG.

There are two annual Japanese events today.

We did it, and I want you know about them.

Kagami Biraki (鏡開き) is a Japanese phrase which literally translates to "Opening the Mirror" (from an abstinence) or, also, "Breaking of the Mochi." It traditionally falls on the January 11 (odd numbers are associated with being good luck in Japan) but, in practice outside of Japan, generally occurs around that date. It is generally the first important event of the year after New Years Day. It refers to the opening of a Kagami mochi

Tondo Matsuri

Tondo Festival

The Tondo Festival occurs in early January around Koshogatsu, the lunar new year. For the New Year most homes and businesses in Japan hang a Shimekazari above the door. Shimekazari are sacred ropes braided from rice straw, and to them are attached various good luck charms, most commonly an orange. The shimekazari wards off evil spirits and invites the Kami to enter.

Tondo Festival At Tondo, a huge bonfire is made and into it are placed the shimekazari and other new year ornaments. The fire is lit by someone born in the same animal year, at this Tondo it was a 12 year old boy, and as the flames and smoke rise in the sky the people pray for health and blessing for the coming year. As the fire dies down a little, children who have been practising their calligraphy for the new year place examples onto the fire. If they rise into the air with the heat, it indicates success for that child for the new year.
Tondo Festival
While all this is going on, the people are served a variety of foods including Tonjiru, a really tasty stew made from pork, taro, and daikon, as well as Mochi, a glutenous rice cake that is a traditional new year food. Lengths of green bamboo are filled with sake and placed in the coals to warm, and then served to everyone.

Hello everybody.

We are going to have Japanese annual event Nanakusagayu party on 7th January @ Backpackers miyajima hostel.

The Festival of Seven Herbs ( nanakusa no sekku?) is the long-standing Japanese custom of eating seven-herb rice porridge (七草粥 nanakusa-gayu?) on Jinjitsu (January 7).

The nanakusa are seven edible wild herbs of spring. Traditionally, they are :

There is considerable variation in the precise ingredients, with common local herbs often being substituted.

On the morning of January 7, or the night before, people place the nanakusa, rice scoop, and/or wooden pestle on the cutting board and, facing the good-luck direction, chant "Before the birds of the continent (China) fly to Japan, let's get nanakusa" while cutting the herbs into pieces. This chant varies as well.

The seventh of the first month has been an important Japanese festival since ancient times. The custom of eating nanakusa-gayu on this day, to bring longevity and health, developed in Japan from a similar ancient Chinese custom, intended to ward off evil. Since there is little green at that time of the year, the young green herbs bring color to the table and eating them suits the spirit of the New Year.

The spring-time nanakusa are mirrored by the "seven flowers of autumn", which are bush clover (hagi), miscanthus (obana, Miscanthus sinensis), kudzu, large pink (nadeshiko, Dianthus superbus), yellow flowered valerian (ominaeshi, Patrinia scabiosaefolia), boneset (fujibakama, Eupatorium fortunei), and Chinese bellflower (kikyō). These seven autumn flowers provide visual enjoyment. Their simplicity was very much admired: they are small and dainty yet beautifully colored. They are named as typical autumn flowers in a verse from the Man'yōshū anthology.
